Adriana Lima was born in Brazil on June 12, 1981. She is of French, Portuguese, Native-American and Caribbean decent. When Lima was 15, she won first place in a Ford Supermodel of Brazil model search. She later won second place in the 1996 Ford Supermodel of the World contest. After her winnings, signed with Ford and moved to New York City to model full time. She later left Ford and signed with Elite Model Management.

Lima started out doing fashion editorial work and some runway work, but she became well known after appearing on a Vassarette (a brand of women's underwear) billboard in Times Square. She then became a Guess? Girl and modeled in their 2000 Costanoa campaign. The same year her face was becoming associated with Guess?, she began working with Victoria's Secret. Her first work for Victoria Secret was on the runway in 2000. Adriana quickly graduated to "Angel" status at Victoria's Secret alongside supermodels Heidi Klum and Gisele Bundchen.

Lima also dipped her toe into the acting world in 2001 when she starred in one of the BMW Films shorts titled, "The Follow." The film also featured Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, and Forest Whitaker.
