|Geri Halliwell Biography
Geri Halliwell was born Geraldine Estelle Halliwell on August 6, 1972, in England. She was raised by her father, Lawrence Halliwell, (of Swedish and English descent) and her mother, Ana María Hidalgo (of Spanish descent). When Halliwell was very young, her mother became a Jehovah's Witness. Halliwell was raised as in the religion, which meant she did not celebrate holidays or birthdays. Halliwell has many older siblings: a half brother Paul, a half sister Karen, a brother Max and a sister Natalie.
Halliwell's claim-to-fame was being one of five members of the all-girl British pop group, the Spice Girls. All the members of the group were given nicknames and Halliwell won the title "Ginger Spice" because of her then-red hair. The group formed in 1994 and they were signed to Virgin Records. In 1996, the Spice Girls released their first single "Wannabe," which shot to the top of the charts and remained there for weeks. The song became the best selling single by a girl group, selling 6 million copies. The Spice Girls went on to release three albums (Spice, Spiceworld and Forever) and ten singles, and sold more than 53 million records worldwide.
In December 1997, Spiceworld: The Movie was released to accompany their album, Spiceworld. Though the film was reviewed poorly by critics and the girls collectively won the 1999 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress, the film earned over $70 million at the box office worldwide.
On May 31, 1998, Halliwell announced that she was leaving the Spice Girls to pursue a solo career. In her statement she said: "Sadly I would like to confirm that I have left the Spice Girls. This is because of differences between us. I'm sure the group will continue to be successful and I wish them all the best." The differences seem to have been between Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) and Halliwell. In her own autobiography, as well as those of Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) and Melanie Brown, it is hinted that that was the case. Halliwell left in the middle of a North American tour, so the rest of the group finished the tour without her. In 2001, the rest of the group broke up, though it was never officially announced. On June 28, 2007, however, all five members came back together for a World Tour and are releasing a Greatest Hits album.
In 1999, Halliwell released her debut solo album Schizophonic. Her single "Look at Me" sold nearly 1 million copies and reached #2 on the UK charts. The next singles "Mi Chico Latino," "Bag It Up," and "Lift Me Up," all rose to #1 in the UK. The album was certified gold, having sold two million copies worldwide.
Halliwell released her second solo album, Scream If You Wanna Go Faster, in 2001. Her cover of the Weather Girls' 1983 hit, "It's Raining Men" sold 2 million copies worldwide, was featured on the Bridget Jones's Diary soundtrack, and was released in the interactive video game, Dance Dance Revolution. The song earned her the International Song of the Year award at the 2002 NRJ Music Awards. Though Scream If You Wanna Go Faster was never released in the United States, it sold more than 1.3 million copies worldwide.
Halliwell's third solo album, Passion, hit the shelves in 2004. The single "Ride It" reached #4 on the UK charts, and hit #1 on the dance charts. Due to complications with her record company, however, Halliwell didn't release the second single, "Desire," until May 2005. This single did not do well on the charts and the album as a whole saw little attention, only selling 10,000 copies in the UK.
In addition to her successful singing career, Halliwell has released two autobiographies titled If Only... and Just for the Record, released in 1999 and 2002 respectively. She released two Yoga DVDs titled Geri Yoga and Geri Body Yoga. She has also found time to become a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations. On May 14, 2006, Halliwell gave birth to her first child, a daughter, named Bluebell Madonna Halliwell. The father is assumed to be her ex-boyfriend Sacha Gervasi (British scriptwriter and former drummer with the band Bush), though she has never confirmed this as fact.
