Katherine Heigl Biography

An attractive, blonde performer, Katherine Heigl first received notice for her work in Steven Soderbergh's King of the Hill (1993). Beginning her career as a child model, she appeared in catalogs for both Macy's and Sears before disillusionment with that line of work made her decide to try her hand at acting. Heigl made her feature debut opposite Juliette Lewis and C. Thomas Howell in the coming-of-age story That Night that was shelved for two years before finally being released in 1993. Her breakthrough role came opposite Gerard Depardieu in the Hollywood remake of the French romantic comedy My Father the Hero (1994), in which she played a precocious 15-year-old who poses as the lover of her father in order to impress the boy of her dreams. While the film was not well received, Heigl's efforts were applauded. After appearing in other movies like Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) and The Bride of Chucky (1998), she turned to the small screen to portray Miranda in a 1998 NBC adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest set during the Civil War. The actress made her series debut as Isabel, an alien disguised as a high school student living in New Mexico, in the critically lauded Roswell (1999-2001), in which fans of the cult hit discovered that the former child star had decidedly grown up: her curvaceous figure made her a favorite photo spread subject of men's magazines.

During her Roswell stint, Heigl continued to appear in features, including 100 Girls (2001) and Valentine (2001), a horror film starring David Boreanaz and Denise Richards, playing a medical student who meets a sudden demise. Also in 2001, Heigl was cast in NBC's Critical Assembly, a thriller in which she and Kerr Smith played concerned college students who build a nuclear device to illustrate the need for a change in national priorities. Post-Roswell she guest-starred on an episode of UPN's update of the classic television series, The Twilight Zone (2002) as a woman who goes back in time to stop one of the most notorious murders in history. Other projects stacked up, including Descendant (2003), a psychological thriller inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher; as Isabel in MTV's modernized update of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights (2003); and a starring sting as Romy in the ABC telepic Romy and Michele: In the Beginning (2005), a prequel to the 1997 feature Romy and Michele's High School Reunion playing the role originated by Mira Sorvino.

In 2005, Heigl was cast in what would become her most high-profile role, as intern Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens on Grey's Anatomy. The show, originally introduced as a mid-season replacement, has become a huge ratings success. In late 2006, Heigl was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for her work on Grey's Anatomy, and in September 2007, Heigl won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Izzie Stevens.

Also in 2006 , Heigl landed the starring role in the independent film Side Effects, about marketing and the pharmaceutical industry. In late 2006, Heigl was nominated for a Golden Globe award in the category, Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for her work on Grey's Anatomy. Also in 2006, she filmed Knocked Up, a comedy from writer/director Judd Apatow, starring opposite Seth Rogen. Upon its June 2007 theatrical release, the film received largely positive reviews from critics, and proved to be a box office success. In 2008, Heigl will star in 27 Dresses, a romantic comedy in which her character is always the bridesmaid and never the bride.

In June 2006, Heigl became engaged to singer Josh Kelley, whom she met on the set of his music video for "Only You." In June 2007, she announced that a wedding date had been set and that the couple would marry in October 2007. The ceremony date was later pushed back to December 23, 2007.
